Pricing • Quotations

Q. How do I order your services?
A. To place an order simply contact me at +49-(0)30-695-34348 or via email. Please describe the project (type of material, format required, number of words, turnaround time desired), and I will quote you a price range. Before I can give you an all-inclusive quote, I'll need to see your document or web pages if it's a website. Please email a copy of your document or the address of your website to voir@gmx.net. Hard copy documents can be sent by fax: +49-(0)30-695-34347 or mail. Once we agree on the price and delivery date, I will start upon the receipt of your Purchase Order. If you do not represent a verifiable translation agency or company, payment must be received in advance. Please contact me for details. The project will be finished on time or ahead of time.

Q. How do you calculate the price of a translation?
A. Translations are priced according to the word count of a source document and the deadline.

Q. How much will proofreading cost, and how long will it take?
A. Desktop publishing, proofreading and editing services are priced on an hourly basis. As a rough guide, for proofreading you should allow approximately one hour per 1000 words of text.

Q. How do I pay for your services?
A. Payments will be accepted in the form of bank wire transfers or PayPal.

Q. What is a minimum charge?
A. Minimum charges are a translation industry standard. If your document contains fewer than 290 words, the minimum charge of €20 will be applied.

Q. What counts as a rush job? Do you charge extra for rush jobs?
A. My normal daily output is about 2,000 words a day, including review and correction time. As an example, a job of 4,000 words that has to be completed within one day, or translation of 1,000 words for same day delivery would be usually considered rush jobs. The rush fee is 50-100% of the usual rates.

Delivery • Submitting

Q. By what methods can you receive and deliver documents?
A. It's easier if documents are provided by email as attachments. Hard copy documents can be sent by fax, mail, courier, or overnight service. I can deliver translations and/or websites by any of these same methods.

Q. For larger documents, which is the best file transfer method?
A. If the file is too large, you can compress it into WinZip for a faster transfer. I can also provide an access to my FTP-server for you to upload the files. If this is the case, please contact me for further instructions.

Translation process

Q. What type of formats do you work with?
A. If your program is not listed here, please contact me -- probably I can help. Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and all the rest), Word Perfect Suite, PageMaker, FrameMaker, Acrobat (PDF), Corel Draw, Illustrator, Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, QuarkXpress, Freehand, Indesign, Efax-reader, Macromedia Flash, Dreamweaver, DejaVu, Trados, and others...

Q. What if I want the translation to look exactly like the original?
A. If your original text is in a electronic format such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc., I can overtype the text, which means the translation can be completed in exactly the same format. Any straightforward layout, such as bold, italics and underlining, will be followed free of charge. If the layout is more complicated, for example, if it contains a large number of graphs or if you need the text to be typeset, I can also help – please ask me for a quotation.

Q. How long does a translation take?
A. The time required to complete your assignment will depend primarily on the amount of material. Other factors include any special formatting requirements. As a general guideline, my normal translation output is about 2,000 words per day. Once I receive your text or website, I'll be able to provide the exact delivery date for your translation.

Q. Do I need to provide a glossary or references?
A. Sometimes, client companies have their own jargon or house style. In such cases the translation process can be quicker and better suited to your particular needs if you can supply information on context, specific vocabulary or "house style".

Website translation

Q. How do I submit my website for translation?
A. I can download your website directly from the Internet without your help. However, if I need the files that sit protected in your server, your webmaster will know how to arrange a transfer from your FTP server. The files can also be sent via email or post on a CD.

Q. What about keywords for my website?
A. The keyword and description tags need to be not only translated, but also localized. This will help the search engines locate your Russian website. I will gladly provide you with this service.

Q. What is website localization?
A. Localization in translations means knowing and understanding the special nuances that only native speakers know and understand. It is the process of adapting a website so that it is linguistically and culturally appropriate to the country or region where it will be used.

Q. Do you include an invisible HTML-code to a word count?
A. Only translatable text is counted. Example: <em><font size="-1" color="#000000">Only this text will be charged.</font></em>

Q. How would you handle Shockwave Flash files?
A. I will need to be sent the source files used to create the flash file. With the source file I can translate any text and then create a new flash file for the Russian website.

Q. How would you handle the graphical elements of the web site?
A. In order to produce a fully localized Russian version of your original website, any graphics that have a textual content will have that text translated and a localized version of the graphic would then be created. If the term to be translated is of a different length or size than the original, I can use a smaller font size or re-size the graphic.

Q. Can you handle CGI scripts, Java scripts, ASP files, databases?
A. I will translate only the appropriate text strings. This will ensure that the scripts remain bug-free. However, it is always better to supply the source text to avoid any problems.

General questions

Q. How do I know I'm getting a good translation? What are your qualifications?
A. In the past 20 years, I have translated a wide range of English and German materials into Russian, including ads, brochures, catalogs, hardware/software documentation, company newsletters, product guides (installation/operation manuals), press releases, slide presentations, video scripts and websites. My qualifications also include a M.A. in Translation and TEFL as well as Bachelor's degree in Radio Engineering. Many of my clients have expressed their satisfaction of my services -- their references and samples of my work are available upon request.

Q. Will my documents remain confidential?
A. Confidentiality is a rule of my professional ethics. I ensure that the content of your document or any other private information remains secret and inaccessible to any third party.

Q. Can you notarize or certify my translation?
A. I am not a notary public and therefore cannot notarize your translation. I can, however, affix a signed certificate of translation accuracy, stating my qualifications and that the translation is true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. This declaration is sufficient for many official purposes, but you should verify whether it will be acceptable for your needs.
